Top Tips

  • Speed = streamlining, baggy shorts slow you down!
  • Wear goggles all the time - it means your head (and your body)will be in the correct position in the water.
  • Don't be late on poolside as all warm-up drills are designed to improve your stroke and body balance and are an important part of the session.
  • The drills you do in warm-up are part of a swimming method called 'Total Immersion'(TI) you can find out more about this on the internet. Total Immersion is designed to help ALL swimmers.
  • Know your times - you should work towards improving your best time - this is called your 'PB' or personal best time.
  • Warm-ups at gala's should be used to loosen your muscles and not to tire you out. Only practise butterfly if you know you are swimming it in the gala and then at the end of the warm-up and only for a short distance. Practice your backstroke countdown to turn from the flags if you are swimming backstroke. Practise a dive. Do a short burst of whatever stroke you are racing in the gala.
